Activate your College Campus
Too often, college students reduce their amount of physical activity and lose sight of making healthy choices when they leave home for school. Creating opportunities that are both fun and exciting are keys to getting collegians more active; they also serve to facilitate social settings for students to meet one another. Here are a few ideas to creating a more active and energetic college campus:
· Intramural sports—this is one of the best ways to stay fit. Recreational sports provides for a consistent schedule and friendly competition. Make sure to post information about sign-ups and deadlines,
· Stadium Club—utilizing this part of campus is one of the best workouts students can get. Climbing steps at a stadium is a great outdoor workout that is sure to be challenging.
· Dancing with the Students—promote a dance club, where students can come and learn or practice their dancing abilities. Change the style of dance from week to week to keep it interesting.
· Adventure Club—Depending on where the college is located or what resources are available, create an adventure club that tries various kinds of activity each week or month (ex: rock climbing, kayaking, or water skiing).
· Running Group—talk with fellow students and post flyers in the dorms or cafeteria about a running group, also find local charities to run for, and include this in the program.
· Mind & Body—host weekly yoga and meditation sessions. This is a phenomenal stress reliever!
· College Field Day—remember all those fun-filled field days back in grade school? Re-create those exciting times on an open recreational field. Some great activities include: Tug-of-War, potato sack races, relay races, and Hoola Hoop contests.
These are just a few great ideas for getting college students up and moving. The gym can become routine and boring for some, but if you make fitness fun and exciting the physical fitness levels on your campus will soar!
